When Bonanno Pisano and his team of engineers and constructors sat down to lay the groundwork for the tower, they probably didn’t think that their greatest architectural folly would literally become a great architectural folly.
The Leaning Tower of Pisa is a freestanding
bell tower in the city of Pisa, Italy. It is one of the four buildings that are
part of the cathedral complex Piazza
dei Miracoli, which means Field of Miracles; which is a pretty apt name because
the Leaning Tower of Pisa is in itself, a miracle.
The construction of the tower began in 1173 and continued for almost another 200 years. Work had progressed till the third floor, which was when they realized that the tower was starting to lean from one side, owing to the soft subsoil of Pisa. Engineers tried to stop the tower from leaning further by adding taller columns and arches on one side of the tower but it still continued to lean. Not knowing what to do next, plus combined with the wars that were taking place during that time, construction was halted for almost a century. Fast forward to the 13th century when construction resumed, engineers tried to fix the tilt, again, but this time, it leant in another direction. As work on the tower continued, it came back to its southward tilt, which is how it is till date.
This tilt has made the tower a world-famous attraction. People fly in from all over the world to see the tower with their own eyes. But the modus operandi is to take photos of it. In fact, not photos of it, but photos with it. There are millions of photos on the internet of people posing in different ways with the tower. Most common photos are the ones in which they are holding the tower from below. Or pushing it from above. Some make it look like they’re kicking it (not sure why you would do that). Then there are the creative souls, who hold an ice cream cone beneath it, making the tower look like an ice cream swirl. The nicer ones though, show their appreciation for this great edifice by hugging it. These are just a few examples that we thought of because we have seen them so many times on social media. A simple search on the internet will show many more photos of what people can come up with.
It is understandable though. You’re on vacation, you want to have a good time, create some good memories. What better way to do this than by taking fun photos with one of the most iconic landmarks of Italy?
